March
March is one of the peak travel months in Sri Lanka as the south-west monsoon blows out and the northeast monsoon continues. Although this is not an ideal month to travel to the North and East Coasts, you can enjoy all other parts of the country while travelling during this month. Rain and storms can be ocassional across Sri Lanka with higher rainfall in east coast. However, the southern and western beaches will experience plenty of sunshine so this is an ideal time to visit for a beach holiday
National Park Private Safaris
March is an excellent time to visit Sri Lanka’s national parks before the rains arrive. Wildlife is still congregating near water sources, and the parks are less crowded. Safaris in the following parks offer fantastic wildlife viewing:
- Yala National Park: Continues to offer prime sightings of leopards, elephants, and diverse birdlife.
- Wilpattu National Park: Known for its tranquil atmosphere and rich wildlife, especially near the lakes.
- Wasgamuwa National Park: A hidden gem with elephants, sloth bears, and a variety of bird species.
- Kumana National Park: An ideal destination for birdwatching, especially migratory species.
- Bundala National Park: Great for birdwatching as migratory birds begin to arrive.
Discovery Kitesurfing Course (Kalpitiya)
Kalpitiya remains a top destination for kitesurfing in March. The winds are still favorable, creating perfect conditions for both beginners and advanced riders. The flat waters of the lagoon offer an ideal training ground, while more experienced kitesurfers can venture into the open sea for a challenge.
Deep Sea Fishing Boat Tour
The seas remain calm in March, making it another prime month for deep-sea fishing. Locations like Mirissa, Negombo, and Kalpitiya provide opportunities to catch large fish such as marlin, tuna, and sailfish. The warm waters and skilled guides make this an unforgettable experience for anglers.
Scuba Diving
March is a wonderful time for scuba diving along Sri Lanka’s western and southern coasts. With clear visibility and warm waters, diving sites in Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, and Kalpitiya offer encounters with coral reefs, vibrant marine life, and even a chance to explore shipwrecks.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling in March is a fantastic way to explore the underwater world. Locations such as Trincomalee, Nilaveli, and Bentota are ideal, with calm waters and great visibility. Visitors can witness an array of colorful fish, coral gardens, and even swim with turtles.
Dolphin Watching Boat Tour
Dolphin watching continues to be a popular activity in Kalpitiya and Trincomalee. As March progresses, the chances of spotting large pods of spinner dolphins remain high. Guests can enjoy watching these playful creatures leap and spin alongside the boats.
Whale Watching Boat Tour
March is still a prime time for whale watching on the southern coast. Mirissa, Galle, and Hikkaduwa are key departure points for tours where visitors can spot blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins in their natural habitat. The calm seas ensure a smooth and enjoyable tour.
